SAS demonstrates its expertise in chilled ceilings for Dublin project

SAS
Bespoke chilled-ceiling panels made by SAS International provided an air-conditioning solution for the refurbishment of a landmark building in Dublin.
SAS CoolCeil chilled ceilings have been specified for all six floors of a prestigious new development in Dublin. Formerly known as Comlstock House, 75 St Stephen’s Green has been extensively refurbished and extended to provide 10 000 m2 of state-of-the-art office accommodation. Architects Burke Kennedy Doyle & Associates specified the chilled ceilings. Homan O’Brien were M&E consultants. The existing building has a low floor to ceiling height compared to modern buildings, and the developer want to maximise the feeling of height within the space. A cooling solution was needed to allow a finished floor to ceiling height of 2700 mm, with only an 85 mm zone available below the coffered slab. Simon O’Brien, joint managing director of Homan O’Brien Associates, says, ‘We worked with SAS to design the first chilled-ceiling system to be installed within an 85 mm zone and offer an energy-efficient solution compared to more traditional air-conditioning systems. Because the original structural facade was left in place, the building did not conform to current space planning and partitioning grids, so the chilled-ceiling panels were made by SAS to bespoke dimensions. The panels have a perforated surface to allow sound to pass through and be absorbed by acoustic pads in the rear of the panel. The hollow-pot construction of the ceiling slab required special fixings to be used in the concrete, and the lengths of the supporting rods was different at each edge of the panel. In some instances, distances between the top of the panel and the ceiling were less than 85 mm. This speculative development is proving successful, with over two-thirds of space already occupied in this landmark building.
