Evaporative cooling tackles overheating in 3000 m2 factory

Providing environmentally friendly and energy-efficient cooling for this Remploy factory in St Helens are six Breezair evaporative coolers.
Breezair evaporative-cooling units installed in the St Helens factory of Remploy Household & Toiletries are reducing temperatures by around 8 K throughout the 3000 m2 production area. They were installation following consultations with CoSaf Environments. This recently built £10.5 million factory has 20 production lines. During summer, heat from equipment such as shrink-wrap machines contributed to uncomfortably high temperatures. John Brogan, engineering manger at the factory, investigated various methods of cooling and decided on the Breezair system as the most beneficial, ecological and economic to run. Six Breezair coolers installed outside the factory produce cool fresh air that is then distributed using galvanised ducting dropping vertically and distribution ductwork and 2-way grilles delivering air into the main production area. An extraction system removes hot, stale air. The entire system is controlled by a 7-day programmable controller. Mike Sullivan, director of CoSafe Environments, explains, ‘Refrigerated air conditioning was unsuitable for this application as it was important to bring ventilation into the area and effect regular air changes. Although Remploy’s primary concern was for the welfare of its employees, the energy-saving, cost and ecological benefits of Breezair cooling were key factors in the company’s decision.’
