Alldales retrofits inverter drives to fans in Sainsbury’s building

To improve the energy performance of this Sainsbury’s building in London, Alldales has fitted six 110 kW inverter drives to supply and extract fans.
Retrofit work carried out by Alldales Drive Systems to fit inverter drives to air-handling systems at Sainsbury’s store support centre in London demonstrates how in-house experience can help overcome the challenges of introducing additional plant into existing buildings to improve energy performance. Sainsbury’s has occupied this 50 000 m2 building for eight years. It has eight upper levels, three deep basement levels and a spectacular atrium entrance. Alldales was asked by facilities-management company MacLellan, which is responsible for the building services, to fit inverter drives to the air supply and extract fans as they came up for replacement. Marco Erol, maintenance co-ordinator with MacLellan, says, ‘Sainsbury’s has an active energy policy which embraces not only the nationwide stores but also extends to its office accommodation. We commissioned Alldales to fit inverter drives as a result of the company’s previous involvement with HVAC systems in the building.’ To date, Alldales has provided six 110 kW drives, which have been fitted to fans in the main plant room. The work was carried out while the building was fully occupied and phased to minimise system downtime. A spiral staircase made access to the internal plant room difficult. Concealed cabling meant that Alldales had to carry out additional work during installation to make the necessary supply modifications and connections, using its own in-house engineering and cabling capabilities to complete the work quickly and cost effectively.
