Gas-engine VRF air conditioning also provides electricity and hot water

A gas engine drives Sanyo Airconditioners’ ECO G Power VRF air conditioning system, which delivers cooling and heating while co-generating hot water and electricity. This is said to be the first time that all four services have been combined in such a unit. The air conditioning provides both heating and cooling and can be connected to up to 24 indoor units. The refrigerant is R410A. 4 kW of electricity can be generated, sufficient to run 40 indoor air-conditioning units or the equivalent of eight computers. 2 to 4 kW of electricity can be generated at an efficiency of over 40%. This electricity can be used on site or exported to the grid. During cooling mode, up to 22 kW of rejected heat from the engine can be used to supply hot water at 65°C. The 20 hp model provides 56 kW of cooling or 63 kW of heating. Waste heat from combustion is recovered and re-used. In addition, engine waste heat is used to ensure that the system does not need a defrost cycle.
