Presence detection cuts university lighting costs

Ex-Or has supplied and installed LightSpot detectors in all corridors and kitchens of the Quays residential development at the University of Essex to switch lights off then they are not required. The project follows similar installations at other locations on the campus.

The Quays accommodates 700 students, and Richard Frost, the university’s energy manager, explains, ‘Before the Ex-Or installation, lights in the communal areas burned endlessly because no-one switched them off. Now the lights only come on when required, then automatically switch off after use.’

Not only have LightSpot detectors reduced the university’s total energy bill by 5%, but maintenance costs have also been reduced — by £2000 a year for the Quays alone.
