Door curtains reduce energy consumption at St Andrews University

The Gateway Building at St Andrews University has its entrance protected by Airbloc air curtains.

Protection from winds off the North Sea for the entrances of two buildings at the University of St Andrews is provided by Airbloc air curtains. They reduce heat loss by up to 80% and achieve significant cost savings. The AC and ACR series of air curtains are installed above the main entrances of the Gateway Building and the new multi-storey Medical Science Building.

Working with specialist contractor Alliances, Airbloc supplied three recessed air curtains with high-capacity fans for the Gateway Building. The powerful fans and efficient energy controller SmartElec provide a stronger barrier while minimising energy consumption.

The Medical Sciences Building has the high-capacity air curtains, each 2 m long and installed in the lobby of the main entrance. The SmartElec energy controls has a built-in digital sensor to monitor the temperature of the air leaving the units so that the electric heating elements can be modulated to deliver the required temperature.

Airbloc units are BMS compatible and are connected to a bespoke over-run facility that includes door controls and PIR sensors to activate the air curtain only when the doors are in use.

The Airbloc system was installed under the University’s Salix invest-to-save fund.
