Silver-ion technology provides microbial protection for ductwork

Lindab now offers its LindabSafe ductwork system treated with a coating that slowly releases silver ions over the lifetime of the ventilation system. The presence of silver ions stops bacteria multiplying and also inhibits the growth of moulds, yeast and algae. AgION is said to be particularly appropriate for hygiene applications such as food and pharmaceutical plants or healthcare. Lindab claims to be the only company offering the AgION coating on ventilation ductwork systems. The silver ions in the AgION coating are held in a zeolite, a type of porous ceramic material, suspended in a tough epoxy coating. It can be applied to all Lindab products — including bends, connectors, reducers and accessories. The AgION coating can be supplied on the inside and the outside of the ventilation systems and stays effective as long as the coating stays on the steel. When ductwork is cleaned, silver ions are wiped off, but new ions are released from the coating to replace them. Duncan McGregor, managing director of Lindab, says, ‘AgION is a specialist product for specialist applications where the highest levels of hygiene are paramount. It provides a solution that the ventilation industry has never previously been able to offer.’
