Toshiba VRF system delivers air conditioning to a listed hotel
Air conditioning has been added to the facilities of the Regent Hotel in Cambridge by two Toshiba SMMS VRF systems.
When the family-run Regent Hotel in the centre of Cambridge felt that it was time to install air conditioning, it approach specialist contractor Adcock Refrigeration & Air Conditioning. The task of installing air conditioning into the large Grade 2 listed Georgian building with severe space limitations was solved by two Toshiba SMMS VRF systems. The hotel has only recently been refurbished, but the air conditioning was installed while it stayed open Among problems to be overcome was the absence of a flat roof area for the outdoor units, because of a new curved design to accommodate two penthouses. A gantry had to be constructed above the fire escape in a passageway between the hotel and the neighbouring building. Once the quietness of the equipment had been proved, planning permission was sought — and obtained. The two penthouses are air conditioned by Toshiba split-system Daiseikai units. In the other 20 rooms, high- wall indoor units have been installed. Toshiba’s simplified hotel controllers restrict occupier control — and limit their confusion. Full central control is available in the manager’s office and can be linked to the check-in/out system to save energy. The reverse-cycle VRF system can supplement the existing perimeter wet heating system if required, and the project benefits from the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme for using energy-efficient products.
