Atkins provides service for research facility at Durham
Environmental features of this new research facility at Durham University, for which Atkins is providing a range of services, include a sedum green roof and the use of natural daylight and ventilation.
The Newcastle office of Atkins is delivering architecture, engineering and project-management services for a £4.2 million innovative research facility at Durham University. Features of the building will include a sedum green roof and sunken floor, which will make the Institute of Hazard & Risk Research appear to be merging with the existing landscape, having been cut into a steep slope bank on the university’s science campus site. Locally sourced products will be used wherever possible, such as natural stone cladding from a quarry in County Durham for the main entrance. Natural daylight and ventilation will also be key aspects of the building, with coloured feature glazing in all main elevations. Simon Watt, senior project manager with Durham University, says, ‘Once completed, IHRR will be a base for the fertilisation and facilitation of new forms of hazard and risk research, bringing researchers together around projects from across the social, natural and engineering sciences.
