MHI VRF air conditioning upgrades services for London headquarters building

50 concealed floor-standing indoor units from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries make up an extensive VRF system providing heating and cooling for the headquarters of a fast-growing broadband and telecommunications services provider in London.
A fast-growing broadband and telecommunications services provider has upgraded the heating and cooling of its headquarters in central London using a VRF heat-recovery system from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. This VRF system serves six floors and allows different parts of the building to operate simultaneously in heating or cooling mode, with surplus heat from one area providing useful energy for another. The previous system serving 1300 m2 of offices consisted of a boiler, fan-coil units and chillers. M&E contractor Capitol Engineering Services replaced this equipment with a total of 50 floor-mounted chassis type fan-coil units served by five roof-top condensing units. Geoff Marchesi, managing director of Capitol Group says the earlier system has been inefficient and unreliable. ‘The building now has a state-of-the-art installation, which will ensure a comfortable working environment in all seasons.’ The new equipment was supplied by distributor HRP. It includes five outdoor units of 33.5 kW of cooling each supporting a total pipe length of over 500 m, with a maximum pipe run of 160 m to the furthest indoor unit and up to 50 m height difference between roof-top outdoor unit and any indoor unit. The outdoor units serve 50 concealed floor-standing indoor units of 4.5 kW of cooling each through refrigerant-flow branch controllers. PFD controllers enable individual indoor units or groups of units to deliver heating or cooling. The PFD controller includes an additional solenoid valve and capillary to reduce refrigerant noise during mode change.
