Replacement chillers reduce energy costs in City of London HQ
The replacement of two Hitachi chillers with two Hitachi Samurai 400 kW chillers at the UK headquarters of Xchanging in the City of London is expected to reduce energy consumption for chilled water by over 60 MWh a year, corresponding to over 7 t of carbon a year. Xchanging is an international business processing company with interests in insurance, financial service and other sectors. Extensive use of IT results in high internal heat gains. The chillers were specified by consulting engineers Parker Wilson Consulting and supplied by Walter Meier (Climate UK). The energy savings are made possible by continuous capacity control of the new chillers and being able to make better use of free cooling — enhanced by the introduction of inverter control on the supply air-handling plant. Graham Wilson of Parker Wilson explains, ‘The inclusion of inverters in the installation enables additional savings to be achieved through finer control of motor speeds in relation to chiller performance. Based on a conservative estimate of the chillers being fully modulated by 15% of their capacity, the Carbon Trust calculates this will deliver a further annual energy savings of 112 GWh, with a further carbon saving of over 13 t a year.
