Walter Meier provides more fitness for less energy consumption

Increasing cooling requirements in this fitness centre at Sheffield University have been met for reduced energy use with a VRF system supplied by Walter Meier.

Not only will a new VRF air-conditioning system in the University of Sheffield’s S10health fitness centre achieve significant energy savings compared to the previous system but it will also meet increased cooling demands.

S10health has 150 pieces of equipment over two floors. Increasing use of electrical equipment in recent years and the growing popularity of the centre meant exceeded the capabilities of the previous VRF systems, and noise levels were also a nuisance to users.

The new 2-pipe Hitachi Set Free system supplied by Walter Meier (Climate UK) provides up to 80 kW of precisely controlled cooling. The refurbishment also included the addition of a recuperator to the air-handling system so that extract air can be used to cool incoming air.

Barry Whittles, head of engineering operations at the university, says, ‘We anticipate this combination of a more efficient air-conditioning system and recuperation from extract air will deliver energy savings of around 15%, while also improving comfort levels for users. We received an excellent service from Walter Meier throughout the project, and the company continues to maintain the system.’
