Durapipe’s large plastic pipework shows its worth in chiller project

The light weight and ease of installation of Durapipe’s SuperFLO plastic pipework in large sizes was used to advantage at the Astrium EADS site in Stevenage.

Durapipe has converted a major contractor to plastics pipework following the installation of SuperFlo pipework as part of an energy-saving project at the Stevenage satellite production site of Astrium EADS. To improve energy efficiency, Cavendish Engineers installed SuperFlo in sizes up to 225 mm for the centralised 2 MW chilled-water system in preference to steel.

The pipework transports chilled water for the air-conditioning system to cool offices and clean rooms.

Steve Allen, managing director of Cavendish Engineers, explains, ‘Owing to the light structured roof, we required a lightweight material. Although we had previously used Durapipe, it was a new experience of using plastic pipework in larger sizes.’

SuperFlo is a sixth the weight of copper and easier to transport and install in restricted spaces.

Steve Allen adds, ‘We found the material very easy to work with and install. The lightweight material meant that we were able to save time on welding sections together, meet the client’s specification and complete the project on time.’
