Monodraught natural ventilation proves ideal for new sixth-form building

Natural ventilation based on Monodraught Windcatchers delivers the ventilation requirements of this new sixth-form college.

Natural ventilation for the new sixth-form building at Kirk Hallam Community Technology & Sports College is provided by Monodraught systems based on Sola-boost Windcatchers. The 2200 m2 2-storey building accommodates 220 students.

The Monodraught installation for the ground floor comprises eight 1000 mm-square Sola-boost systems serving a large performance hall, a sixth-form social area with kitchen, two science laboratories, and a technology workshop. The per­formance hall also has four 530 mm Sunpipes to bring in natural light.

The first-floor installation includes 12 800 mm-square Sola-boost Windcatchers for five classrooms, a private-study room and three ITC rooms. Two offices have 300 mm Sunpipes.

Monodraught also supplied two control panels to control the 15 ventilation zones. The panels enable the natural-ventilation system to be integrated into the school’s overall BMS.

Because of the design of the building, it was not possible to achieve the levels of front-to-back crossflow ventilation required in the classrooms, so a stack-effect roof-mounted system was chosen. The solar-powered fans in the Sola-boost Windcatchers provide more ventilation when it is required.
