ASDA takes action against limescale in hot water

Watermatic, scale, limescale, water treatment
Action to reduce limescale formation by ASDA is based on the installation of Watermatic KalGuard+ units — such as this one at Andover.

Supermarket chain ASDA has started using Watermatic’s KalGuard+ units to reduce the build-up of limescale in direct hot-water system and in kitchens and food-preparation areas in its stores. The first unit was installed in May 2009 and has been operating for over 12 months.

Nicholas Riley, mechanical-services engineering manager for retail development with ASDA says that he is happy with the result so far. ‘Many of our stores operate in hard-water areas, and it plainly makes sense to try and address the issue of limescale at the point where the water supply comes into our premises form the mains, At Andover, we have been able to mount the KalGuard+ unit at the mains-supply inlet.

‘Initial feedback from people working in the stores suggests that the unit is doing what we were told it would do and is providing the level of water treatment required to ensure that timescale build-up does not become a major issue for us.’

KalGuard+ is an inline powered electrolytic water-treatment device that delivers a proportional release of zinc to manage limescale in a system. A sophisticated controller matches the dosing to suit the hardness of the water, with a measurable ‘residual effect’ throughout the system. Independent testing at Cranfield has shown that limescale formation on heat-transfer surfaces can be reduced by up to 80%.
