Software models daylight in buildings

Passivent has launched a software tool to enable architects and specifiers to accurately and quickly assess the impact of natural daylighting on the energy performance of a building. The company worked with software house EDSL to develop Passivent Sunscoop Builder, which complements the Passivent Airscoop Builder tool for natural ventilation in buildings. Both tools are based on substantial recently published research.

Sunscoop Builder enables users to model the building daylight factor with the company’s ducted lighting systems — Sunscoop and Sunstract. The number and size of Sunscoops and Sunstracts to achieve a given internal illumination can be calculated, as well as their impact on energy and carbon performance.

Both tools interface with EDSL’s Tas thermal-analysis tool for buildings, which is approved for calculations for Part L2 and Energy Performance Certificates.
