Square-pattern PIR detectors give effective lighting control for MediaCityUK

BMS, Controls, Theben, PIR
Theben KNX PIR detectors with a square detection pattern are used extensively throughout MediaCityUK to control lighting.

The thousands of PIR detectors required for the effective control of lighting in various areas of the MediaCityUK development at Salford Quays was significantly reduced by the selection of Theben HTS KNX units with a square detection pattern. The square pattern of the detection field is determined by the design of the lenses and internal sensor, making it possible for KNX specialist EnTech to plan the installation without overlapping detection fields and redundancy.

EnTech won all the contracts for designing, installing and commissioning lighting controls in all the BBC Buildings, the Studio Building and Towers, the Salford University building and the Public Realm. The first phase of the project involved over 3000 Theben HTS presence detectors.

The design of MediaCityUK is at the leading edge of energy efficiency, and KNX open-protocol control over an IP network was an early choice for the developers Peel Media.

The KNX option is allowing for central monitoring and control of all lights — along with automated testing of emergency lights, system administration reporting and interfaces to other building services such as fire alarms.

The Theben detectors maintain the required lighting level using natural light where possible and the minimum of artificial light. Desired lighting levels can be determined detector by detector if required.

Intelligent remote controls enable lighting levels to be changed, during a presentation for example, and blinds to e closed.

Baxi research suggests schools strongly support heat decarbonisation

A survey conducted by Baxi of 200 state school estates managers, consultant engineers and M&E contractors has found that while enthusiasm for Net Zero and support for low carbon heating systems in schools is thriving, persistent barriers remain.
