Kentec provides fire vigilance for Wellcome Trust Centre at Oxford

The replacement fire detection system at the Wellcome Trust for Human Genetics is based around Kentec control panels and Hochiki devices.

Kentec fire control panels are at the heart of a new fire-detection system at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, a research institute of the University of Oxford. When the university decided to replace the 10-year-old fire alarm and detection system, it was agree with Pyrotec Services that the new system would be based around Hochiki’s Enhanced Systems Protocol, Hochiki devices and Kentec control panels.

The university safety office insists on open-protocol systems and commonality of equipment. Using Hochiki devices and Kentec control panels for all replacement and new systems has been the norm for 20 years.

The centre is in the Henry Wellcome Building of Genomic Medicine and houses over 400 people on three floors.

The project involved installing a Kentec Syncro 12-loop 96-zone analogue addressable control panel and two Syncro Focus network LCD repeater panels using existing cabling. Around a thousand devices were installed, including nearly 500 ACB-E analogue multi-sensors.

These multi-sensors incorporate a variable-temperature heat element and a rate-of-rise heat element. Both are controlled from the control panel, allowing either or both elements to be active in making the fire decision.
