LED lighting helps cut energy use for M&S

The M&S store at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol is one of over 170 stores using LED lighting.

Marks & Spencer is replacing T5 ribbon wall-light fittings with low-energy LED lighting in over 170 stores in the UK. The work is being carried out by Balfour Beatty Engineering Services as part of M&S’s goal of reducing energy usage by 35% by 2015. For the first phase of the project, BBES worked with lighting manufacturer Philips.

Steven Palmer, BBES project manager, says, ‘The new LED lighting is expected to make a significant impact in helping to reduce Marks & Spencer’s non-merchandise lighting costs. The specification of Philips long-life low-energy lighting systems represents significant cost savings for each store.

Future projects by BBES for M&S will include energy monitoring, intelligent lighting controls and waterless urinals.

BBES will also work with M&S to develop systems for remotely managing in-store lighting, heating and ventilation equipment, and food refrigeration system. An added benefit will be fewer maintenance-related call-outs, with their associated environmental impact.
