Lochinvar helps new dementia hospital reach BREEAM ‘Excellent’

Contributing to a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for a new dementia intensive-care unit in Norwich is the provision of domestic hot water by a large solar-thermal system integrated with gas-fired condensing water heaters, all provided by Lochinvar. This £13.7 million facility is at Hammerton Court, part of the Julian Hospital in Norwich of the Norfolk & Suffolk Foundation (NHS) Trust.
The architecture, structure and building services were co-ordinated using a 3D design and draughting software model, which was combined with the services information to avoid clashes. Lochinvar provided detailed design input and supplied 10 solar-thermal collectors, two twin-coil hot-water storage vessels, two EcoShield water heaters and an EcoKnight gas-fired condensing boiler to form a comprehensive heating and hot-water package for the whole facility.
Robert Forster of the trust adds that the system integrates with the ground-source heat pumps, which were installed separately and provide heating as well as a boost for the hot water.
Jacob Sismey, senior mechanical engineer with Ingleton Wood, who provided the building-services design, says that Lochinvar had been recommended to his team by the client and ‘proved to be very helpful and informative on the requirements of the project’.
