The air-handling requirements of the tiered seating of the Aquatics Centre of the London 2012 Olympic Games is provided by Moducel units with Fanwall technology.

Helping to provide energy-efficient environmental control for the Aquatics Centre used in the London 2012 Olympic Games are 10 Moducel air-handling units with Fanwall technology. They serve the tiered seating. Fanwall technology is based on a modular array of small-diameter fans housed in individual cubes; the concept replaces the single or dual fans using in conventional air handlers.

Each fan array can be designed to match the performance specification — making possible a reduced footprint and significant improvements in reliability, energy efficiency, noise levels and operating cost.

The key difference between Fanwall technology and other fan-array systems is the direct-drive fan, the use of system optimisation controls, and the Coplaner Silencer and FBD backdraught damper patented by Hunter Inc. of the USA, which pioneered the use of fan arrays.

These air handlers bring in fresh air, heat it as required and deliver it to the seating area.

The Aquatics centres is some 200 m long and has a footprint of 22 000 m2 and a volume of about 500 000 m3. Facilities include two 50 m pools and a 25 m diving tank.
