Remodelling of district heating saves money for Croydon residents

336 FlatStation heat-interface units from SAV Systems played a key role in the remodelling of district-heating systems for an estate in Croydon.

SAV Systems has supplied 336 FlatStation heat interface units for district-heating systems on the Handcroft Estate in Croydon. The project included decentralisation and upgrading of boiler plant and has delivered significant savings for Croydon Council. It will also reduce service charges for tenants in the future.

David Leek of Croydon Council explains, ‘The estate was originally served by a central boiler plant with no local temperature in individual dwellings. Consequently there was considerable temperature variation, and we even had people opening windows in winter, which was clearly very wasteful.’

With the help of funding from the Greater London Authority, the boiler plant has been decentralised into eight smaller boiler houses, each serving 23 to 63 residences.

FlatStations in each flat provide local control of heating and hot water. The flats have also been fitted with programmers, room thermostats and TRVs. Hot-water cylinders have been removed.

The work was carried out by Clairglow Heating of Sevenoaks.
