Energy-performance contract sees CHP boost at Welsh hospital
Expanding the CHP plant at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny will increase the capacity by a third and boost overall energy savings from the CHP by 35%, based on current gas and electrical tariffs. The work is being carried out by Honeywell Building Solutions 13 years into a 25-year energy-performance contract.
Under the contract, energy efficiency upgrades have helped the hospital reduce its energy and operational costs by over £5 million. In 2013 alone, the programme saved £515 000 and reduced the carbon footprint by 1261 t. The expansion of the power plant will be funded by the energy savings.
Since the contract started, Honeywell has implemented a programme of energy-saving initiatives. They include the installation of multiple turbine-based CHP tri-generation system, full lighting retrofit, complete upgrade of the BMS and installing inverter controls on motors to reduce electrical loads.In clinical areas, Honeywell schedules work to minimise disruption and adopts procedures to minimise infection risk while maintaining 100% availability of all essential services.
