Low noise levels win healthcare chiller contract for McQuay

McQuay
The first of six McQuay chillers chosen for their low noise levels is installed at the Manchester Joint Hospitals project.
The low noise levels of McQuay’s ALS XN air-cooled chillers with screw compressors was a key factor in their specification for what will be one of the largest healthcare facilities in the UK. Six machines have been ordered for the Manchester Joint Hospitals project. This £414 million project includes an adult mental-health unit, rehabilitation building, education centre and children’s hospital. It is being built next to the existing Manchester Royal Infirmary in the city centre. These chillers are also said to have a smaller footprint than competitive models. Each chiller has a cooling capacity of almost 1500 kW and is 11 m long. They use the low-pressure refrigerant R134a. Two machines are already on site for the cardiac and renal units. The remaining four units are due to be delivered towards the end of 2007
