Oventrop valves are quiet performers at the Royal Festival Hall

The low-noise characteristics of Oventrop valves have been utilised to meet a noise specification for the refurbished Royal Festival Hall which is half that of a normal office.
Valves for the upgrading of the heating circuits carried out as part of the £91 million refurbishment of London’s Royal Festival Hall have been supplied by Oventrop. The contract covered all valves for the LTHW variable-temperature heating circuits. The specification required a noise rating of RC15(N) in the auditorium, half that of a normal office. The selection of valves was therefore critical, so M&E contractor Shepherd Engineering Services installed Oventrop Series F low-flow thermostatic radiator valves with remote roomstat sensing for the radiant heating panels, as specified by consulting engineers Max Fordham LLP. These TRVs have an ultra-fine preset facility, making them particularly suitable for low-noise applications. The TRVs are used with Oventrop Hydromat differential-pressure regulators linked by a capillary to Hydrocontrol double-regulating valves to provide regulation of both flow and differential pressure. These differential-pressure valves do not have a bypass, avoiding a source of unacceptable noise levels. The work involved stripping out most of the original pipework, dating from 1951, and installing a new cooling system using fan-coil units and air-handling units. The work also included refurbishing the existing main rooftop and auxiliary plant rooms, the pipework for which was installed by SES.
