Tool specialist enjoys the benefits of Breezair evaporative cooling

Sweltering summertime temperatures in the machine shop of Technicut have been overcome using five Breezair evaporative coolers.
Technicut, which designs, makes and supplies specialist rotary cutting tools, has overcome the problem of summer temperatures in machine shops reaching 32°C by installing Breezair evaporative cooling. Maximum temperature is now 26°C. The success of two Breezair coolers from Seeley International installed in one of the machine bays of the Sheffield factory led to three more coolers being installed in the other two bays. Clean Air Group, which distributes Breezair evaporative coolers, has also installed 10 more coolers in Technicut’s new facility, which is scheduled for completion in January 2008. Technicut has the largest number of precision CNC grinding machines in the UK for producing specialist tooling. Production manager Peter Nield discovered Breezair coolers when he visited the stand of Clean Air Group at the MACH2006 exhibition in Birmingham, and invited the company to carry out a survey of the machine shop. The coolers are mounted on the roof, with internal vents strategically placed to inject fresh, cooled air into each of the three bays. Peter Nield explains, ‘Prior to the Breezair coolers being installed, we relied on opening doors and windows and using fans to create air movement. Despite this, temperatures were still unbearably hot, and employees regularly complained. Since the Breezair coolers were installed, we have seen a drop of 6 to 8 K, which has drastically improved conditions.’ By introducing a steady flow of fresh, cooled air into the machine shop, the Breezair coolers have greatly accelerated the extraction of very hot, stale air from the building, thereby improving working conditions. Temperatures are controlled by programmable regulators, which provide four different control modes.
