Dalkia contracts see sharp fall in Ofcom’s carbon emissions

Carbon-dioxide emissions from the headquarters of Ofcom have already been reduced by over two-thirds by using Dalkia’s Carboncare energy services solution.
Dalkia’s success in improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon-dioxide emissions at the headquarters of Ofcom in London has led to an extension of the contract. The first three months of the contract saw carbon-dioxide emissions reduced by 21%, representing over 77 t, compared with the equivalent first quarter in 2006. Over the following six months, medium-term initiatives were put in place to deliver a further 20% reduction in emissions, resulting in an estimated 5% cost saving to the total facilities-management budget through a shared savings arrangement. As part of Ofcom’s drive to improve its energy efficiency, Dalkia utilised Carboncare, its sustainable energy services solution. As elements of this approach, Dalkia addressed energy procurement, bill validation, green-energy sourcing and lighting and plant optimisation. The key to the saving, however, was a hearts-and-minds campaign to encourage Ofcom employees to be more energy efficient. The contract, with a focus on environmental aspects of FM and energy-saving practices, has been expanded to deliver a comprehensive energy-management service at another major Ofcom site, with the potential for management services at the regulator’s 12 national and regional offices. The £1.4 million contract now caters for hard and soft services, including M&E, HVAC, building-fabric maintenance, security systems and manned guarding, internal planting, fire systems and window cleaning. There is an on-site help desk.
