Ultra-low NOx boilers are key to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating

The very low NOx emissions of these Ultramax boilers form MHS contributed to an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating of a major office building in London’s Paddington Central scheme.
Contributing to the ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating of a major office in the Paddington Central scheme is the installation of five Ultramax gas-fired condensing boilers from MHS Boilers. They serve high- and low-temperature circuits. The downward-firing water-cooled pre-mix burner arrangement maximises combustion efficiency and keeps NOx emissions down to 11.5 mg/kWh — easily exceeding the requirements for the best BREEAM NOx rating. Specifying consultant Martin McLaughlin of Faber Maunsell explains, ‘The low NOx emissions of Ultramax boilers were essential in achieving the building’s excellent BREEAM rating. Space-saving efficiencies in the plant room were also achieved through the compact size of the units’ One Kingdom Street was built by Skanska and has an area of 24 000 m2. The five R3600SB stainless-steel boilers have a total output of nearly 4.5 MW. Three boilers serve the LTHW circuit, which includes air-handling plant, main fan-coil units and warm-air space heating. Two smaller boilers service a circuit operating at a flow temperature of 80°C serving hot-water calorifiers and radiators.
