Trace heating supports single-pipe DHW services in four Bristol PFI education projects

Bristol Brunel Academy is one of four PFI schools in Bristol to exploit the benefits of single-pipe domestic-hot-water systems with Raychem HWAT trace heating to maintain temperature.
Raychem HWAT systems have been installed to maintain the temperature of single-pipe domestic-hot-water systems in four new PFI schools and colleges being built in Bristol by Skanska in partnership with Bristol City Council and Partnerships for Schools. Raychem provides a simple, intelligent and energy-efficient method of ensuring that hot water is instantly available at every tap in a single-pipe system, including those on dead legs. Electric trace heating on the pipework maintains the water at a constant 55°C without the need for secondary recirculation plumbing. This approach to maintaining temperature is said to be significantly more energy efficient than conventional recirculation systems and, by eliminating return pipework, also offers savings in space, material and installation time and cost. Jointing Technologies South West, a distributor partner for Tyco Thermal Control, which makes the Raychem system, supplied and installed over 8 km of trace cables for Hartcliffe Education Centre, Brislington Enterprise College, Bristol Brunel Academy and Whitefield Fishponds Community School. Paul Manning, an M&E project manager with Skanska, comments, ‘We have installed new thick-wall plastic pipes rather than copper for hot-water services and were delighted that the HWAT system proved highly effective on these. It enables us to take advantage of the benefits offered by a single-pipe system.’
