Keston boilers heat country mansion for under £300 a year

Annual heating bills of just £280 are being achieved by an energy-efficient country mansion of some 600 m2 using two Keston condensing boilers. These boilers were specified by the owner, designer and building of Poachers Retreat, Malcom Cox. The C55 natural-gas boilers can operate individually or together to deliver a combined output of 110 kW. They are SEDBUK A-rated and up to 98% efficient with extremely low NOx emissions. The second boiler is only used in particularly cold spells in the winter. The mansion includes a double-height galleried hallway of 11 by 7 m with a vaulted ceiling — and even this area is heated effectively. Delighted with the low energy bills, Malcolm Cox is refurbishing a neighbouring Grade II listed farmhouse and will be installing a Keston C55 boiler there. Poachers Retreat is in Warwickshire and has five reception rooms, six bedrooms and three bathrooms set in 11 acres. Ancillary buildings include a triple garage with apartment above. Ecological features include double-glazed leaded light-effect windows with solar-efficient glass, underfloor insulation, and high-specification roof and inter-floor insulation.
