BMS controls fresh air for respiratory centre

BG
Control of geothermal energy and natural ventilation is provided for this respiratory centre by a BMS installed by BG Controls.

BG Controls has installed a state-of-the-art building-management system in the £12 million rehabilitation complex of BreathingSpace at Rotherham. This complex aims to improve the quality of life for over 2000 people each year with chronic pulmonary disease, as well as their families and carers.

The building exploits thermal mass, geothermal heating, solar hot water and natural ventilation and cooling. The centre is on a sloping site, which has created a large undercroft that is fundamental to the operation of natural ventilation.

To facilitate the use of fresh-air ventilation, BG installed a Trend IQ BMS to modulate low-level dampers in the undercroft. These units draw in outside air and store it in a plenum vessel to cool. Floor dampers open to let this cooled air into the building, avoiding the need for mechanical air conditioning.

The BMS also controls the geothermal heating system, which uses two heat pumps to serve underfloor heating.

A touch screen in the plant room enables staff to change parameters. There is also a PC on site with a graphical user interface to enable users to review the operation and performance of the building.

BG can also monitor the building’s operation from the bureau in its head office.
