Heat pump helps store meet 20% requirement for renewable energy
A new store in Sheffield for Southport Golf Complex will be helped to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very good’ rating by air-source heat pumps from Danfoss Heat Pumps. A unit with a thermal output of 105 kW has been installed at the 1880 m2 retail outlet to supply space heating to the extensive open-plan sales area by a 10 km underfloor heating system divided into 10 zones.
Managing director Keith Wainman is committed to the use of green technologies and wanted to create a showcase building to encourage other businesses to follow suit. The heat pump also provided a cost-effective method of meet the planning requirement of sourcing 20% of energy from renewable sources.
Mr Wainman explains, ‘After considering several tenders, we selected the one which included the Danfoss heat pump because it had sufficient output to heat the building from a single unit, whereas the other systems required the use of several units.
‘We have also worked with Danfoss on the heating system for another commercial premises, where we had been impressed by their high level of technical expertise.’
The outdoor unit is at the rear of the building with a buffer tank in the underground car park. Energy savings of 190 MWh are expected compared to a gas boiler to heat the space to the same temperature.
