Engineering firm takes action on shortage of apprentices

adi Group, pre-apprenticeship scheme

To stimulate interest in engineering from school pupils, multi-faceted engineering company adi Group has launched a pre-apprenticeship scheme for 14-to-16-year olds. The scheme takes a contingent of 12 students into its workshop for half a day each week and will occupy 10% of their overall curriculum time.

Alan Lusty, CEO of adi Group, commented, ‘Our new pre-apprenticeship scheme marks a significant moment in our efforts to link industry and education. The skills gap is the result of a lapse between the economic needs of our country and those that prepare the younger generations to meet them.

‘At adi, we recognise how crucial young, skilled apprentices are to securing a healthy economy and vibrant future for our country.

‘More businesses need to follow our example by engaging with young people and encouraging them to consider engineering as an attractive potential career. We believe our pre-apprenticeship scheme will create a comprehensive model which other schools and employers will be able to replicate.’
