Variable-speed drives

The Altivar 21 range of variable-speed drives from Telemecanique can replace fixed-speed starters in fans and pumps. Not only will energy be saved, but it is also possible to eliminate mechanical devices for controlling flow and pressure — such as valves, throttles and diverters. In most applications, all the cost of a new drive and its installation will qualify for Enhanced Capital Allowances. Standard features include a PID regulator for effective control of flow and pressure, automatic catching for spinning loads, adjustable switching frequency to suppress noise and resonance, and adaptation of current limiting according to motor speed. Communications options such as LonWorks, BACnet and Metasys simplify connection to a BMS.
