CIBSE low-carbon register progresses towards thermal simulation

Published:  18 March, 2007

A section for those qualified in the use of building-simulation software is being added to CIBSE’s register of low-carbon consultants. It will be launched at the institution’s national conference in London on 24 and 25 April.

This new part of the register is for those who have been trained and examined in their competence on one of the simulation packages used to perform both the thermal-simulation and SBEM compliance calculations associated with Part L2. Training and examination for this aspect of the register will be carried out by software provider Integrated Environmental Solutions.

Stephen Matthews, CIBSE’s chief executive, aid, ‘We are delighted that the success of the low-carbon consultants register has allowed us to branch out into the simulation side and further build on the expertise offered by those on the register.’

Dr Don McClean, managing director of IES, explains, ‘DCLG-approved thermal-simulation software offers building designers a more comprehensive route for assessing Part L2 compliance for complex and simple buildings, alongside the SBEM engine. This development is particularly important in helping the industry as it gets to grips with these complex changes to the Building Regulations.’

At present, DCLG is not considering competent-person applications, but CIBSE remains hopeful that its scheme will ultimately receive some form of official recognition from DCLG. There is no other competent-persons scheme, and this register is seen as a trustworthy alternative until formal schemes are in place.
