Unico system delivers comfort and ventilation in refurbished Glasgow mosque

To combat large heat loads generated by hundreds of worshippers in this refurbished mosque in Glasgow and deliver the required ventilation, four Unico systems have been installed.
The hugely variable requirements for heating, cooling and ventilation of a mosque in Glasgow are met by a Unico system installed during the complete refurbishment of the Madarassa Taleem ul Islam. The idea for using the Unico system came from local-government engineer Zahir Ahmad, who was involved in the planning and implementation of this mosque renovation. Demands on the system vary enormously. During Ramadan, around 600 worshippers pack into Madarassa for 90 minutes of prayer, imposing a large cooing load in a building that is now insulated to modern standards. This mosque has three floors for worship and Islamic education, and four powerful 4260 M series Unico fan-coil units were required. This unit is the largest in the range and has a heating capacity of 27 kW and a cooling capacity of 18 kW. There is one air handler in the basement, one in the attic and two above the suspended ceiling on the ground floor. A single boiler was installed to supply warm water to all four units. There are also another three boilers to serve the radiator system and generate hot water. When the Unico system is operating in air-conditioning mode, each air handler is supplied with coolant from its own outdoor condensing unit. Cool air is delivered at high velocity through unobtrusive outlets in the suspended ceilings to provide draught-free climate control. The system can supply up to 100% filtered fresh air.
