Heathrow Airport extends the use of ozone water treatment for cooling towers

Terminal 4 cooling towers
More cooling towers serving Terminal 4 at Heathrow are to be treated by Waterwise Technology’s ozone system.
Following the successful performance of ozone water-treatment systems for cooling towers in three terminals at Heathrow Airport, Waterwise Technology is to supply two more Filtex Compact 60 units for Terminal 4. These two units will operate alongside an existing 200 g ozone unit and boost the water-treatment capacity to cater for additional cooling towers to cope with increased demand caused by the upgrading and extension of check-in areas. The extension is part of the upgrading and refurbishment of Terminal 4 for airlines moving from other terminals following the switch of all British Airways flights to Terminal 5. Using ozone avoids the need to store and handle large quantities of potentially hazardous chemicals in the terminal buildings. It also minimises the environmental impact of BAA’s operations, reducing carbon footprint and environmental discharges. One benefit is a 30 to 50% reduction in water to waste to achieve a 10 to 15% reduction in overall water consumption. After disinfecting the water, the ozone breaks down naturally to normal oxygen. Jon Fielder, technical director of Waterwise, comments, ‘By choosing Waterwise ozone systems, BAA have confirmed their confidence in this equipment, which has been in operation on cooling systems within Heathrow for some years. BAA clearly recognises that ozone provides a level of protection that cannot be achieved by other methods of water treatment.’
