Honeywell IT infrastructure supports atomic research

Research at the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment is support by a new IT infrastructure installed by Honeywell Network Services.

Honeywell Network Services has completed the installation, commissioning and documentation for the IT infrastructure at the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment. Situated at Aldermaston, AWE is a centre of advanced research, design and manufacturing for the UK’s nuclear deterrent.

Honeywell has been a network installer for AWE for 15 years, but the need to modernise and expand the IT network exceeded its current capacity.

Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and the other AWE sites at Burghfield and Blacknest required a major installation programme. It was essential that this work compiled with the MoD’s JSP440 regulations for security.

The team comprised 25 engineers, including a project manager, installation supervisor, surveyors and a CAD engineer.

Honeywell also provided the resources, manpower, tools and materials for the installation of about 200 km of cabling material — including 150 km of fibre optics and 55 km of copper cable. 5500 fibre ports were also installed, along with 644 copper wall boxes and 6 km of plastic and metal trunking.
