New levels of heating efficiency will be achieved in a Cheshire School following the replacement of 20-year-old boilers with these cast-iron boilers from Buderus.

Under a partnership agreement with Cheshire County Council, MITIE Engineering Services has worked with Buderus to replace 20-year-old boilers at Greenbank School in Northwich. The work was part of a wider refurbishment, with three 200 kW cast-iron boilers being installed to serve existing radiators and pipework to meet the heating needs of the whole school and accommodation blocks for residential students.

These cast-iron boilers were chosen in preference to a system using condensing boilers as the existing installation has a high water volume with high flow and return temperatures to meet the heavy regular demand pattern. In these circumstances, a condensing boiler would not have operated in condensing mode for long enough to be economical or efficient. The new Buderus boilers have a net operating efficiency of up to 96%.

Greenbank was built about 35 years ago and caters for children with moderate and severe learning difficulties. There are 96 pupils aged from 11 to 18.

It is one of 15 recently completed projects which form a partnership agreement between Cheshire County Council, MITIE Engineering and Buderus — together with consulting engineers Paul Moy Associates of Liverpool.
