Flakt Woods wins Shard ventilation contract

Flakt Woods, Shard, ventilation, smoke ventilation
General and smoke ventilation for The Shard will be provided by equipment from Flakt Woods.

Flakt Woods has won the contract to supply the ventilation requirements for The Shard in London, currently under construction next to London Bridge Station. At 310 m high, it will become Europe’s tallest habitable building, with 95 floors, 72 of which will be occupied.

HVAC specialist Gardner & Co. is responsible for meeting the ventilation requirements. Working with Flakt Woods, the project brief outlined a range of specialist venting JM fans, providing emergency smoke ventilation, as some smaller general extract fans.

Following the fabrication processes pioneered by Mace, a prefabrication strategy was implemented to minimise site installation and the quantity of materials on site. Flakt Woods and Gardner designed fire-rated enclosures that were skid mounted and made in Flakt Woods’ factory at Colchester using the Flameshield range of fire-rated ductwork. These project-specific fan assemblies are designed to operate as general extract and, if required, to extract smoke and prevent it entering escape routes.
