BSI photo-voltaics committee role for Martin Cotterell of Sundog Energy.

Martin Cotterell, founder and technical director of Sundog Energy, has been appointed chairman of a British Standards committee dealing with photo-voltaic energy systems — BSI committee GEL/82. This committee is responsible for the UK input to the equivalent international committees (IEC TC82 and CLC/TC 82), which set the standards for all elements of solar PV systems — from the operation of the solar cells to the way the electricity generated is fed into the national grid.

Richard Taylor, standards market development director at BSI, said, ‘Martin has been a valued contributor to GEL/82 for some time now, and we are delighted to welcome him to his new role as chairman. It is a very responsible and key position within our standards work.’

Martin Cotterell said, ‘The appointment is the culmination of years of commitment and involvement with GEL/83 and other industry bodies in my quest to advance the use of solar PV as a technology.’

He is the author of many industry standards on the design and installation of solar PV and wind-energy systems. He sits on various UK industry technology schemes, including the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and the REAL (Renewable Energy Association Ltd) panel — an Office of Fair Trading consumer-protection scheme for the whole micro-generation industry.

Established for over 16 years, Sundog Energy designs and installs renewable-energy systems for commercial and public-sector bodies and households. The company installed the PV systems at London’s King’s Cross Station, The London Olympic Par and Bradford Cathedral.
