Lumicom is working with Thorn Lighting to help the University of Lincoln meet waste-management targets by ensuring that old luminaires removed during a refurbishment project are disposed of incompliance with the WEEE Directive. The work covers 17 halls of residents comprising 1037 furnished student bedrooms and includes replacing lights with a lower-energy solution using Thorn LED and T5 fluorescent luminaires.

In the first phase of the refurbishment programme, 1479 luminaires were removed, with the waste being separated into skips provided by Lumicon. The second phase involved a further 1429 luminaires being disposed of under the WEEE Directive. The final phase in 2014 will complete the refurbishment of all 17 blocks.

Specifying luminaires from a Lumicon member enables the university to delegate responsibility for disposing of the old luminaires to a single body — confident that disposal would e in line with regulations and best practice, complete with a full audit trail.
