The first installation of Carrier AquaForce chillers equipped with variable-speed inverter-driven screw compressors delivers air conditioning for two office developments at 1 and 2 New Ludgate in central London. The 30XAV 950 chillers are equipped with Greenspeed intelligence to help deliver excellent part-load performance.

Air conditioning for the building is supplied by six of these chillers, alongside three updated Carrier RBM 520 and three 30RBM 420 Aquasnap chillers with scroll compressors.

Carrier worked with the client, consultant and engineering-services contractor SRW to design and build a solution to meet stringent efficiency and noise requirements for the new Land Securities buildings.

To reduce noise, Carrier designed and built a custom package to totally enclose the chillers. It was tested in Carrier’s laboratory at Montluel near Lyon in France.

The original design was to locate the water-cooled chillers in the basement. However, the compact footprint of these chillers enabled Carrier to present an alternative design to install them on the roof, making basement space available for other uses.

The project includes a bespoke pump, control and chiller-sequencing package.

Danny Lear, specification and solutions manager with Carrier UK, explains, ‘The software was programmed in-house and designed to maximise energy efficiency and air-conditioning performance, as well as extend the working life of the chillers by careful run-time sequencing.

We were able to carry out full witness testing of working chillers at Carrier’s facility in France, ensuring the solution fully met the specification.’

Following installation, Carrier’s services team will provide a full maintenance contract.
