HFO chillers will recover heat from data centre

Two Carrier AquaForce water-cooled screw chillers using an HFO refrigerant with a very low GWP (global-warming potential) have been selected for the Plan-les-Ouates district-heating project in Sweden. These chillers use HFO1234ze, which has a GWP of 7 (compared with around 1800 for traditional refrigerants) to provide 2.5 MW of total heating capacity.

The firs phase of this mixed-use real-estate development in Plan-les-Ouates recovers and re-uses waste heat from a data centre on the site to provide heating for local offices and other facilities.

As part of the second phase, the extended installation is expected to provide heating to 3000 individual homes within a planned residential zone

This project is believed to be the first district-heating project in Europe based on a water-cooled screw chiller using an HFO refrigerant compliant with the EU fluorinated gases regulation.

Carrier SCS manufactured and tested the technology in its factory at Montluel in France. The system was delivered by Walter Meier Company, Carrier’s distributor in Switzerland.
