Chloride provides critical power protection for high-energy research
Uninterruptible power supplies with a total capacity of 2.1 MVA have been installed in this new research facility at Harwell by Chloride Power Protection.
Chloride’s extensive experience and expertise in providing power protection for mission-critical applications was called on for the design and installation of a robust system for Diamond Light Source — the largest scientific facility to be built in the UK for 40 years. It is on the Harwell Scientific & Innovation Campus and houses a huge synchrotron in a doughnut-shaped building covers the area of five football pitches. The synchrotron accelerates electrons to generate powerful light through a beamline to enable scientists to study matter at molecular and atomic scale. The main ring has a circumference of 560 m. Chloride was commissioned to design and install a total solution for critical power protection. Beamline time is at a premium, so maximum power availability is vital to support the integrity of data acquisition and the functioning of control systems and building services. This requirement is met by a high-integrity 2.1 MVA uninterruptible power supply network to protect and maintain power integrity throughout the site. The beamlines, data acquisition and the control and instrumentation area from which the synchrotron is operated are protected by 17 UPS units of 100 kVA each from Chloride’s 90-NET Series. Back-up power to smaller systems throughout the main building and also communications and data cabinets in auxiliary offices is provided using 70-NET 30 kVA UPS units. To simplify the central management of the entire UPS system, Chloride’s ManageUPS CIO software package is used. This system avoids engineers having to walk 13 km every day to check the operating status of each UPS! Diamond Light Source is installing a building-management system with an interface to CIO via BACnet IP protocol to enable the facilities team to monitor the UPS on the central BMS.
