Coolmation has supplied a Rhoss air-cooled water chiller to replaced a life-expired R22 unit at the 4-star Marriott Hotel in Bexleyheath. This modern hotel has 142 bedrooms, as well as restaurants, lounges, conference facilities and a spa. It relied on an efficient and effective air-conditioning system to meet the expectations of its clients.

The new chiller is from Rhoss’s Z-Power range and has a cooling capacity of 700 kW. It was custom built to fit into the existing space. Early indications are a 15% reduction in electricity consumption.

The hotel’s head of engineering Ian Le Quelenec says, ‘Due to the age of the unit at the hotel, the old system ran intermittently at full capacity. There was some downtime, so it is difficult for me to give precise figures on efficiency savings. The new chiller’s stepless capacity control contributes to efficiency by allowing the system to adjust smoothly and efficiently to changes in use.’

A crane was used to remove the old chiller and lift its replacement into place.

Two high-efficiency twin-screw compressors spread the load over individual refrigeration circuits. The contra-flow shell-and-tube evaporator is of a patented design and has internally finned copper tubes to maximise thermal performance.

An electronic expansion valve reduces energy consumption, and the chiller qualifies for Enhanced Capital Allowances so that its cost can be offset against tax in the first year rather than over 10 years.

As part of the project, the pipework was made good up to the existing 30 mm-thick foil-faced mineral-wool sections. All joints have been completely sealed to prevent condensation. All valves, strainer and flanges are fitted with purpose-made insulated aluminium boxes. The insulation is weatherproofed with PIB sheeting.
