Drain Center helps bring groundwater cooling to Undergound station

Over 2.2 km of high-density polythene pipe has been supplied by Drain Center for a cooling scheme for Green Park Underground station based on ground water.

Drain Center has played a key role in the use of ground water from 80 m-deep boreholes to provide cooling for the platforms of Green Park Underground station in London. Cold water from the ground is extracted from two boreholes at the rate of 25 l/s and passed through a heat exchanger. The return water is put back into the ground via two more boreholes.

The boreholes are in Green Park, which is next to the Underground station. High-density polyethylene pipe supplied by Drain Center carries water to and from the boreholes and is buried a little below ground level.

Because of the nature of the site and for safety reasons, the size of lorry that could be used for deliveries was limited, and delivery times were tightly specified. MCA Hire supplied equipment to cut 372 lengths of pipe in half, with each shortened length being 6 m long and 160 mm in diameter. MCA Hire also supplied an electro-fusion machine to weld lengths together on site. Every joint was tested to ensure there was no leakage.
