Refurbishment enhances factory heating and ventilation

A wide range of comfort and energy benefits are being provided by a new heating and ventilation system in the plastic injection-moulding plant of Collins & Aikman in the West Midlands. The Ambi-Rad system satisfies heating requirements in the winter and ventilation requirements all year round. The factory at Elmdon, Solihull, makes components for manufacturers such as Land Rover. The production process generates a considerable amount of heat, so when the company decided to remove the 40-year-old warm-air duct heating equipment, an efficient automated heating-and-ventilation system was a prime requirement. M&E contractor Admec of Birmingham designed, engineered and installed a system based on 14 Ambi-Rad indirect gas-fired fully packaged STE400 air-handling units. The units are controlled by the new building-management system, which detects fresh-air requirements and provides balanced extract ventilation. Supplementary low-level wall-mounted fresh-air input grilles with automatic dampers enhance fresh-air input in the summer. Gurbachan Virdee of Admec says, ‘As a result of the new heating-and-ventilation installation, the client can achieve their environmental objectives for the building, including energy conservation, enhanced system performance, flexible system management, improvements in safety and environmental standards and reduced operating and maintenance costs.’
