Marflow helps deliver flexible space heating

Control of fan-convector heaters in this day centre in Dudley is achieved with the help of Marflow Xterminator valve assemblies.

Marflow Axial Xterminator valve assemblies connected to fan-convector units have simplified the installation, commissioning and control of fan-convector units at the Crystal Gateway day centre in Dudley. The centre is being called a ‘dementia gateway by the council.

To achieve a flexible heating system with full end-user control, the council worked with Biddle Air Systems, Gill Mechanical and Marflow Hydronics.

The valve assemblies were supplied pre-assembled and pre-tested for installation into a fan convector.

Axial PICVs (pressure-independent control valves) were selected as the best products to use in the valve assemblies as the heating system uses a variable-speed pump. BACnet controls are also pre-installed into the Biddle fan-convector units. PICVs combine the function of differential-pressure control valve, regulating valve and 2-port control valve in one unit.

The Axial design is selected when either a manually operated valve is required or when electric actuation is preferred.

Marflow also supplied actuators and control for the 11 fan convectors to provide a balanced energy-efficient system that could be changed at any point.

A master network controller gives absolute control of the system, with multiple application log-ons so that all the right people have the authority. The system can be scheduled weekly, monthly and yearly using a basic calendar function to that rooms are only heated as and when required.

The contractor had never used the equipment before, but received training from Marflow and Biddle. Training was also offered to the consultant and end user to maximise understanding of the system so that the full benefits could be realised.
