Biomass-heating provider Wood Energy has extended its reach to the Outer Hebrides with the installation of a 999 kW Binder wood-chip boiler for a drying mill at production facility of Uist Asco on North Uist. This automatic boiler uses timber from the company’s own renewable supply to process knotted wrack seaweed harvested from the shores of the island into feedstuffs and organic fertiliser for the agricultural sector.

Raghnall Maclain, managing director of Uist Asco, explains, ‘Our plant is the culmination of five years’ work, and Wood Energy worked closely with us to make sure we got the unit that would best suit our needs.

‘We have our own 720 ha of coniferous forest, which my father originally planted over 20 years ago. Last year alone, we planted an additional 5000 trees. This produces over 1500 t of wood chip for use each year.’
